âJohn Sloman is one of the great and oft-overlooked rock and roll vocalists and no doubt shares that honour with the equally great Terry Reid. Cut from the same cloth as Robert Plant, David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes⌠â. (Russ P â Uber Rock)
âPeople Powerâ. Youâve heard of it â right?
âEl Doradoâ was released in May 2018 as a download via cdbaby, Amazon and iTunes. In spite of the low key launch, the people who've heard or downloaded the album have given it glowing reviews. Recently hinted at on Johnâs Facebook page, such was the response to an imminent release on CD, that (as John delightedly reports), âeven those who had downloaded âEl Doradoâ wanted the CD format!â. The album has now been remastered for CD
A proud son of Cardiff, South Wales, John Sloman is best known worldwide for his tenure as frontman with both Lone Star (whose albums are much sought-after amongst Classic Rock fans) and also the legendary Uriah Heep. John is delighted that his current album is now receiving an overdue cd release â although the circumstances that influenced the writing and recording were intensely personal: â âEl Doradoâ is about my brother Robert moving to USA, marrying, divorcing, getting sick, me going over there to bring him home, and his 11 months in hospital before suddenly dying.â
Some history âstuffâ:
After Lone Star, a brief tenure with a short-lived band featuring bassist Pino Palladino (Paul Young, The Who) came to an end when John received the call in 1979 to join Uriah Heep. He recorded the âConquestâ album (Record Mirror *****) with the band in 1980, leaving the following year. The remastered and subsequent Deluxe cd editions of the album included several co-writes with John, including the single, âThink It Overâ with the late, great Trevor Bolder (Bowie, Wishbone Ash). It was Bolder who had suggested John to Heep. In 1981, John also played keyboards (uncredited) on UFOâs âThe Wild, The Wlling and the Innocentâ. Determined to strike out on his own, John formed John Slomanâs Badlands, which also included a pre â Thin Lizzy, John Sykes, the band failed to secure a deal, but bassist Neil Murray and John ultimately joined Gary Moore for Garyâs album, âRockinâ Every Night â âLiveâ In Japanâ and live on tour across the UK to promote Garyâs âCorridors of Powerâ album on which he was also featured. .
The first of Johnâs solo albums came in 1989, with the Todd Rundgren-produced âDisappearances Can Be Deceptiveâ and throughout the 1990s came projects with (amongst others) old mate Pino Palladino; Lone Starâs Pete Hurley; guitarist, the late Alan Murphy (Kate Bush, Level 42 etc); The Who â affiliated Steve âBoltzâ Bolton and on âFastâ Eddie Clarkeâs album, âIt Aint Over Til Its Overâ.
With the new millennium came 3 further solo albums, including âDark Matterâ (2003) featuring âJamminâ With Jesusâ - recorded by Toto guitarist, Steve Lukather - â I always thought itâs a great songâ - originally recorded with Jeff Beck but left unreleased by him. For the largely acoustic â13 Storysâ (2006), John is credited as playing all the instruments, including cello and harmonium. The acoustic album, âReclamationâ arrived in 2009. For you completists out there, NWOBHM legends, Praying Mantis also featured John on vocals for 3 tracks on their album, âThe Journey Goes OnââŚ
âŚas indeed it does, for John Sloman.
